糸島地方における民家建築の流れを汲んだ近代的な和風建築の好例
福岡県糸島市二丈田中に所在する椛島家住宅は、国の登録有形文化財です。国の登録有形文化財とは、建築してから50年以上が経過した建造物を使いながら残していくという制度です。
椛島家住宅は、元々は二丈田中の大地主であった「満生（みついき）家」の住宅でした。また、糸島地方最大の前方後円墳「国史跡・一貴山銚子塚古墳」とは敷地を接しており、満生家の方々はこの古墳を先祖の墓という意識をもち、庭の一部として管理してきました。
登録された建造物は、明治30年頃に建てられた主屋や、蔵、門、塀などです。南門に入ると正面に主屋と庭門及び塀、左手に古墳、右手に庫院（旧納屋）があり、納屋の東壁に連続して東門・北門及び塀があります。区画された中で主屋、庭門及び塀、庫院を見ることができ、南門及び塀とともに上質な景観を創り出しています。主屋は2階建で間口が広く、玄関がなく農家のニワと共通する前庭など、江戸時代の民家の特徴を残しています。主屋の随所には、当時の建具職人、左官職人、絵師の技術の高さが伺える細工が施されるなど、当時の地主層の民家における前近代と近代の上質な特徴を併せもち、糸島地方における民家建築の流れを汲んだ近代的な和風建築の好例として、高く評価されています。
なお、現在も住居として用いられている建造物群であるため、常時の公開はされていませんので、ご注意ください。

A Fine Example of Modern Japanese-style Architecture Inheriting the Tradition of Folk Houses in the Itoshima Region
The Kabashima Family Residence, located in Nijo Tanaka, Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is a nationally registered tangible cultural property of Japan. This registration system is designed to preserve buildings that have stood for over 50 years while continuing to use them in daily life.
Originally, the Kabashima Residence was the home of the Mitsuiki family, who were prominent landowners in Nijo Tanaka. The residence adjoins the Ikisan Choshizuka Kofun, the largest keyhole-shaped burial mound (zenpō-kōen-fun) in the Itoshima region, which is a designated National Historic Site. The Mitsuiki family regarded this ancient tomb as the grave of their ancestors and have maintained it as part of their garden.
The structures designated as registered cultural properties include the main house, a storehouse, gates, and fences—many of which date back to around 1897 (Meiji 30). Upon entering the south gate, the main house, garden gate, and fences appear directly ahead; to the left lies the burial mound, and to the right, a former barn now used as a storehouse. The east and north gates, along with additional fencing, are connected to the east wall of the storehouse. Within this well-defined layout, the main house, garden gate, and fences—together with the south gate—form a refined and harmonious landscape.
The main house is a two-story structure with a broad frontage, lacking a conventional entrance hall. It features a front garden reminiscent of traditional farming homes, retaining characteristics of folk houses from the Edo period. Throughout the residence, intricate craftsmanship can be seen in the fittings, plasterwork, and painted details, reflecting the high level of skill of artisans of the time. These elements showcase both pre-modern and modern qualities typical of affluent rural homes of the era. As such, the residence is highly regarded as an excellent example of modern Japanese-style architecture rooted in the folk house tradition of the Itoshima region.
Please note that the buildings are still used as a private residence and are not open to the public on a regular basis.
